Why Are We Here?
The overarching vision that guides us is the Amity High School Mission:
“The mission of Amity Regional High School is to create an inclusive community that affirms the contributions, strengths, and talents of all of its members. We bear a responsibility to ourselves and to the school community to develop in all students the skills and the desire necessary to become contributing members of a just society.”
Amity High School Library Mission
The library seeks to support the school’s mission through a multi-faceted program that includes the services, instruction, and resources needed to promote student development. Our mission statement is in keeping with our own program goals, as well as Amity’s Core Values and Learning Expectations, and the student learning standards established by the American Association of School Librarians (2007).
The mission of the Amity High School Library Media Center is to provide all members of the learning community with the services, instruction, and resources they need to effectively access, interpret, use, and share information in all media, so that they can acquire knowledge through inquiry and critical thinking, create new ideas, contribute to their communities, and gain personal satisfaction.
Amity Regional High School Core Values
The Amity Regional High School community is dedicated to three overarching principles that guide our beliefs and actions. We are committed to developing:
FAIRNESS: Compassion, Integrity
RESPECT: Collaboration, Communication
PASSION: Persistence, Inspiration
The library promotes FAIRNESS by ensuring equity in the availability of information and services to everyone in the community and by building skills in knowledge in the norms of academic integrity, RESPECT by modeling and encouraging productive and constructive collaboration and co-working, and PASSION by stressing the rewards of persistence in academic pursuits.
Library Curriculum: Information Literacy
Information Literacy Instruction is at the core of what we do. Our instructional goal in Amity’s Library Information Center is to teach students how to become lifelong users of information.
We have aligned our curricular goals to the standards for student learning established by the American Association of School Librarians (2007), and to Amity’s Core Values and Learning Expectations (2018). These standards take students from recognizing situations in which they need to find information, through effective strategies for searching, organizing, using, and sharing that information. Using digital technologies is an important component throughout the information use process.
You can view the curriculum of Amity’s library program, and access resources that teachers can use to embed information literacy in their content curriculae.
